This week we have a very packed and intense session on War & Photography. You have already visited the AWM, so you have a good sense of what constitutes war photography. We will be watching two videos - Frank Hurley and James Nachtwey. We will also be looking at some early war photography like this one by Roger Fenton (The artist's van, 1855). Some questions to think about....(hint, think about them, they will be on the test!):
1. Apart from the obvious technological changes, in what ways has war photography changed in its 180+ years?
2. Compare your reaction to Hurley images, Nachtwey images and those from the AWM - how did you react differently to each of these?
3. Do you think the media has oversaturated us with violence so that we no longer "react" to an image of war suffering? If not, what does it mean to "react" to such an image?
